Who Actually Owns Your Tulsa Business Website?

If your web designer disappeared tomorrow, you might not be able to touch your own website. That's not a scare tactic. It happens to Tulsa and Broken Arrow business owners more often than most of them expect, and they usually find out at the worst possible moment.

Most people think of a website as one thing. It isn't. It's a handful of separate pieces, and each one can be registered to a different person, under a different login, on a different credit card. When everything's working, nobody notices. When you want to switch providers or just update your hours, you find out fast who's actually holding the keys.

The Pieces You Should Own Outright

Before you sign with anyone, or right now if you already have a site, figure out where each of these lives and whose name is on it.

None of this means a managed setup is bad. A fully managed website can save a busy owner a ton of headaches. Somebody else handles updates and renewals, plus the 2 a.m. surprises. The real question is whether "managed" means they're doing the work for you or they're holding your stuff. Those are very different deals, and you deserve to know which one you've got.

How to Check What You Have and Fix It

Start with the domain. Run a lookup on the public ICANN registration tool. Many registrations use privacy protection, so you may only see the registrar's name. That's still useful. It tells you where to log in, or who to ask.

Next, dig through your old email. Search for welcome messages or receipts from a registrar or hosting company. Found one? Try logging in. If you can't, or the account clearly belongs to someone else, that's your answer.

Then have a direct conversation with whoever built your site. A good web designer in Broken Arrow won't flinch at this. Ask who's listed as the owner of your domain, whether they can add you as an admin on the hosting account, and what exactly you'd walk away with if you left. Simple questions. You should get simple answers.

If the answers are vague, or you hear something like "don't worry about that, we handle it," worry about it a little. Handling it is great. Owning it is a different thing entirely.

Here's a quiet one that bites businesses all over the metro, from Owasso to Bixby: the old employee. A nephew or a former office manager set everything up years ago with their personal email. They've moved on. Now every password reset goes to an inbox nobody can open. Getting that access back is possible, but it's slow and it's frustrating. Fix it before you need it.

Once you've tracked everything down, write it all in one place. Registrar, host, renewal dates, and logins stored in a password manager. It's boring work. It takes maybe an afternoon. And it could save you a week of downtime someday when something goes sideways and you need to act fast.

Your small business website is an asset, the same as your truck or your storefront. You wouldn't let someone else keep the title to those.
